Comprehensive car insurance

Comprehensive car insurance is usually the top of the range type of insurance you can get for your vehicle. It includes just about everything and sometimes additional services such as breakdown recovery are part of the deal.

In South Africa people can generally choose from comprehensive car insurance, third party, fire and theft insurance or third party only insurance.

What does comprehensive car insurance cover?

You would have to read the fine-print of your insurance policy but you are generally covered for the following risks and events:

  • Theft and hijacking
  • Vandalism
  • Fire, hail and other natural disasters
  • Accident damage
  • Civil unrest, riots and explosions
  • Certain medical costs
  • Falling objects
  • Claims by third parties

Remember to check the policy from your insurance company to check what you are covered for – the details matter when you need to lay an insurance claim!

 Is mechanical breakdown covered?

No – the warranty on your new car covers this and after your warranty has expired you can take out separate mechanical breakdown cover.
