The Road Accident Fund is a statutory fund in South Africa designed to protect all road users and to take care of people injured by vehicles or to compensate families of loved ones killed in vehicle accidents.
The fund is financed by a levy on fuel and administered by insurance companies. The Road Accident Fund (RAF) gives limited cover and for this reason insurance companies also offer “balance of third party” insurance which covers the shortfall. This is why your car insurance policy has exclusions for any cover that is provided by the RAF.
